Choosing a Birthday Cake for a Child with Food Allergies

Planning a birthday party should be enjoyable, but food allergies can add another layer of worry—especially when several children will be eating together.

Parents may need to consider dairy, egg, wheat or nut allergies alongside intolerances, vegan diets and the possibility of cross-contamination. The birthday cake often requires the most thought because it is shared, handled and served to several guests.

As both a baker and a parent in a family living with food allergies and sensitivities, I understand how important it is to ask clear questions and avoid making assumptions.

Here are some practical points to consider when ordering a child’s birthday cake.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Give the baker complete information

Tell your baker about every known allergy and dietary requirement before placing the order. Do not rely solely on labels such as “vegan” or “gluten-free”. A vegan cake will be made without dairy and eggs, but it could still contain wheat, nuts, soya or other ingredients that are unsuitable for your child.

Similarly, a gluten-free cake is not automatically free from milk, eggs or nuts.

A clear enquiry might say: “My child has allergies to eggs, milk and nuts. One guest also avoids gluten. Please could you explain which of your cakes may be suitable and how they are prepared?” This gives the baker the opportunity to explain their ingredients and processes accurately.

-------------------------------

Ask about the kitchen and suppliers

A responsible baker should be willing to explain how allergen risks are managed.

Useful questions include:

  • Which allergens are used in the kitchen?
  • Are separate utensils or equipment used?
  • How are surfaces cleaned?
  • Do ingredient suppliers handle other allergens?
  • Is precautionary allergen labelling used?
  • Can the bakery guarantee complete absence of traces?

At Marisola Parlour, our products are made without wheat, eggs, dairy or nuts. We follow careful food-safety and cross-contamination procedures, but some ingredients come from suppliers that handle allergens. For this reason, we cannot guarantee the complete absence of traces. This distinction is important. “Made without” describes the recipe and preparation, while “allergen-free” can suggest a guarantee that may not be possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Consider one inclusive cake

At some parties, the child with an allergy is given a separate packaged cake or dessert. Although this may be necessary in some situations, it can make the child feel noticeably different from their friends.

Where the allergy information and individual circumstances allow, choosing one cake that accommodates several dietary requirements can create a more inclusive experience. Everyone gathers around the same cake, sings together and receives a slice from the same celebration centrepiece.

Our children’s celebration cakes are plant-based and made using gluten-free ingredients, without wheat, eggs, dairy or nuts. They are available in different colours and can include a cake topper, making them suitable for a wide range of birthday themes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keep decorations in mind

The cake itself may meet your requirements, but additional decorations can introduce other ingredients. Check any:

  • Sweets
  • Chocolate decorations
  • Sprinkles
  • Biscuits
  • Cake toppers
  • Edible prints
  • Fresh or dried flowers

This also applies to decorations purchased separately by the customer. Always retain the original packaging so that ingredient and allergen information can be checked.

Non-edible toppers should be removed before serving, and flowers should only be used when they have been identified as suitable for cake decoration.

Order early

An allergy-conscious cake should not be a last-minute detail.

Ordering early gives you time to:

  • Discuss the child’s requirements
  • Read the allergen information
  • Confirm the cake size
  • Select the flavour and design
  • Arrange collection or delivery
  • Share relevant information with other parents

Bespoke designs may also require additional notice, particularly during busy periods.

A birthday cake that includes everyone

Children remember how a birthday made them feel. Being able to join friends around the table and enjoy the same cake can be a meaningful part of that experience.

Our aim at Marisola Parlour is to make celebrations feel less restrictive for families managing different food requirements—while still creating a cake that feels joyful, attractive and full of flavour.
